Ajax DOF Marc Overmars explains why they failed to land Tottenham Hotspur winger Steven Bergwijn.

Tottenham Hotspur announce transfer of Dutch forward Steven Bergwijn to Ajax

Tottenham Hotspur and Ajax have reached an agreement for the transfer of Steven Bergwijn to Ajax, Spurs announced on their official Twitter account. The 24-year-old ends his two-and-a-half-year stint with the club after joining from PSV Eindhoven.

The Holland international joined the North London side in the winter transfer window of the 2019/20 season. The winger had a memorable start to his Tottenham career, scoring on his debut against Manchester City in a 2:0 win over the Cityzens.

In total, Bergwijn made 83 appearances for us and scored eight goals while assisting a further 10. But after initially featuring in every Premier League game in his debut season, the Dutch national struggled for game time.

In the 2021 season, the 24-year-old started 13 league games. In 35 total appearances in the campaign, the winger managed to score just one goal.

Last season was even more unremarkable in terms of his time on the pitch. Bergwijn played under 900 minutes of football for Tottenham. His end at the club isn’t as fans would’ve envisioned back when he signed.

With the additions made to the squad and Conte seemingly untrustworthy of the player, a move away feels appropriate. Harry Kane, Son Heung-min, Dejan Kulusevski, Richarlison and Ivan Perisic are a considerable strike force.

Some fans have expressed disappointment in his departure. They feel Bergwijn had the potential to succeed at the North London club. It was just bad timing for the 24-year-old. The uncertainty around managers and his role in the team may hinder his career at Spurs.

The Dutch national now leaves us to go back to the league where he made a name for himself. With the World Cup round the corner, maybe this is the right decision for Bergwijn.

Now, let’s take a look at how some of our fans reacted on Twitter after the club confirmed their first high-profile departure this summer.
