Tottenham Hotspur star Richarlison grateful he avoided a life of crime
Tottenham Hotspur centre-forward Richarlison is headed to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar with Brazil. The 25-year-old has become a household name in England.
He was introduced to English football by Watford before he was bought by Everton. After a successful time – at least on an individual level – the Brazil international joined Spurs this summer.
He was also the top-scorer for his country at the 2020 Olympics, where he scored five goals as his nation won the gold medal for the second time.
He still has a long way to go in his career. This will be his first World Cup and if he impresses at the grandest stage of all, then this could even be the beginning of his rise to super-stardom.
But it could have all been different. Born in Nova Venecia in Espirito Santo – a small town in his home country – Richy saw poverty and crime around him as a child.
Thankfully, he had people that guided him away from that and supported his dream of becoming a footballer one day. Richarlison has thanked them for this when speaking on the docu-series World at their Feet on discovery+ (h/t Football.London):
“My journey was a bit difficult. Where I lived, everything was happening. I saw a lot of money, weapons and drugs. And this is a moment when you have to decide. My father supported me.”
“There was also my uncle, who I lived with for a while. I think that the people who were around me helped a lot. Thank God I never got involved in things like this.”
His family will be proud to see their very own superstar taking the field for Brazil on the biggest stage in world football. Richy joined Spurs just this summer but he feels like he has been here for ages.
