Aston Villa set to sign Tottenham Hotspur target Clement Lenglet from Barcelona

Premier League rivals Aston Villa are set to sign Barcelona defender and Tottenham Hotspur target Clement Lenglet, according to the Daily Mail.

The Villans are looking to add reinforcements to their backline in the ongoing transfer window after the injury to Tyrone Mings. The 30-year-old centre-back picked up a serious injury in the opening game of the season against Newcastle United.

To that end, the Villa Park side are on the verge of getting the 28-year-old from the Blaugrana to bolster the defence. The French national has been looking for an exit from the La Liga outfit this summer.

Xavi does not seem to count on Lenglet. Barcelona have been trying to offload the defender’s wages off their books. Now, the centre-back will most likely be back in the Premier League at the Birmingham-based club.

The French national spent the 2022/23 term on loan at Tottenham. As per Spanish publication Sport, the North London side have been interested in acquiring the centre-back’s services in the summer of 2023 as well. But the club have been unable to come to a consensus with the Blaugrana.

At Villa, Unai Emery has done an exceptional job since being appointed manager last season. The former Villarreal head coach is about to add Lenglet to his ranks, with the likes of Ezri Konsa, Pau Torres and Diego Carlos already at his disposal.

At Tottenham in the previous campaign, the French national played a key role in the backline. The former Sevilla defender ended up starting in 24 games in the league for the North London side.

However, Ange Postecoglou has counted on Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven at the start of the new season. Although, Spurs could arguably do with more quality on the bench, with Davinson Sanchez and Eric Dier at the gaffer’s disposal.

Lenglet had his moments in a Tottenham shirt in the previous campaign. While the French national did not convince of deserving a place in the starting lineup, he seemingly showcased the ability to add depth to our squad.
