Ange Postecoglou seemingly implies his January signing let Tottenham ‘down’ vs West Ham

Ange Postecoglou talks about Timo Werner possibly ‘letting him down’ against West Ham

In the aftermath of Tottenham’s 1-1 draw with West Ham United, manager Ange Postecoglou reflected on the performance of Timo Werner and the team’s overall decision-making in the final third.

Big Ange acknowledged the importance of improving the players’ understanding and decision-making in attacking situations, highlighting areas where the team fell short. Here is what he told BBC:

“We are working with all the guys all the time to try to get a better understanding. I thought in the front third, some of our decision-making and clarity of thought let us down a little bit.”

While acknowledging the players’ efforts, Postecoglou emphasised the need for sharper decision-making and execution in critical moments during matches, pinning it down mostly to Werner, considering it was a question about the German winger’s positioning throughout the game.

Werner’s performance against West Ham, while commendable in certain aspects, also revealed areas where he could do with some help. Even though he got an assist, there remains a sense of belief that the player can do much better.

Moving forward, Tottenham will likely continue to focus on refining their attacking play and optimising their offensive output, all while maintaining that balance of defensive solidity. Postecoglou’s commitment to tactical development and player improvement underscores his proactive approach to team management, instilling a culture of continuous learning and growth within the squad.

There still remains a lot of untapped potential in this Tottenham side and once that has been unlocked, we can stake our claim for the highest order of silverware. Until then, we have to showcase the best version of ourselves and push towards a top-four finish.

The management will undoubtedly back Timo Werner to perform to his potential.
