Rain-soaked drama as Tottenham miss top four chance in West Ham draw

Tottenham Hotspur were left frustrated after missing an opportunity to move into the top four in the Premier League table following a rain-soaked draw against West Ham at the London Stadium yesterday.

The visitors started the game on top, which soon reaped dividends as Spurs notched their opening goal in the fifth minute with a Brennan Johnson tap-in from a Timo Werner cross from the left flank. The goal came merely seconds after Bowen failed to convert a very similar chance at the other end.

It looked like this was going to be a long night for West Ham, and the Lilywhites would seemingly move into the traditional top-four places at the end of the night, although, thanks to missed chances, they soon capitalized on a Kurt Zouma goal from a corner to bring both sides level. Both sides demonstrated efforts, but nothing materialized goal-wise in the second half.

Destiny Udogie came closest to goal in injury stoppage time when he volleyed it straight to goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski.

Tottenham never looked like capitalizing on an opportunity to notch up a couple of goals and move over Villa, who are due to face Manchester City at Etihad Stadium on Wednesday.

A draw at London Stadium means West Ham have gone four straight Premier League home games without defeat in the London Derby against Tottenham Hotspur for the first time since 2001, when the Hammers went on a run of six, avoiding defeat against the Lilywhites under the tutelage of Harry Redknapp.

David Moyes will be fairly happy to share points and, moreover, with the record of not letting their city rivals get better of them at home for the fourth consecutive time.

Like Tottenham, West Ham are also chasing European qualification places, and a shared point will take both sides a long way.
