Tottenham suffer blow in their pursuit of Nico Williams as Barcelona president Joan Laporta hints at potential deal
Speaking to Catalunya Radio as quoted by Fabrizio Romano, Barcelona president Joan Laporta has revealed that the club have the finances to make a deal happen for Athletic Bilbao star Nico Williams this summer who is on Tottenham Hotspur’s radar.
Tottenham are among a host of Premier League clubs interested in signing the breakthrough Euros 2024 star with the likes of Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United also registering interest in the 21-year-old.
Already a key figure for Ernesto Valverde in his Athletic Bilbao team, his performances for La Roja on the biggest stage have propelled his stature to a whole new level. Thus, interest from European giants has followed.
Alongside Lamine Yamal, the 16-year-old Barcelona prodigy, the duo have been two of the most exciting players to watch in the Euros so far. Spain under Luis de la Fuente have been the best team so far in this tournament.
We revealed a couple of days ago that despite Tottenham being interested in the player, Nico Williams is inclined to reject all Premier League offers and prioritize a move to Barcelona if he decides to leave this summer.
Speaking about the situation, here is what Joan Laporta had to say in an update that would crash Premier League hopes
“I like Nico, a lot. I can say that financially we can make it happen. It’s result of work that has been done over all these years to reach this point. We could, of course, face a signing of this level”
Speaking about the electric duo who are just 16 and 21 years old at the time of writing, here is what De La Fuente had to say – “They have a gift from God, very few players have these qualities. We’re trying to treat the situation normally, but also trying to explain by being humble he will develop so much more.”
When Barcelona want to sign a player, they usually find a way to accomplish the same and it looks like the same situation will transpire with Nico Williams. The only question mark was whether they’d be able to afford a deal for him.

Now that Laporta has come out with an open statement, it’s best Spurs start focusing on other targets for the wing. We weren’t favourites to begin with and the situation is likely to continue for the time being.
