Tottenham eyeing Fenerbahçe’s Sebastian Szymański

According to Turkish outlet A SPOR, Tottenham Hotspur are looking to make a move for Fenerbahçe midfielder Sebastian Szymański this summer.

The 25-year-old played a crucial role in his side’s 99-point run in the Turkish Süper Lig last season, despite which they finished second in the league behind same-city rivals Galatasaray, who racked up a historic 102 points.

Last season was Szymański’s first season at the Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium after his permanent move from Russian side Dynamo Moscow. He had spent a year-long loan spell at Fenerbahçe the season before.

The aforementioned report from A SPOR states that a transfer package in the region of €25 million is being prepared for Szymański by the North London club.

Szymański’s current contract at Fenerbahçe, bringing him a little over €80k per week in salary, is set to run until the end of the 2026/27 season.

If this move comes about for the amount currently being reported, it would make Szymański the most expensive sale in the club’s history.

Szymański would be a sweet deal in more ways than one

Ever since winning the UEFA Europa Conference League with Roma, José Mourinho has always remembered to take a dig at Spurs for being the only club he has not won a trophy with whenever he gets a chance.

While it’s factually incorrect anyway (he didn’t win anything at Benfica and União de Leiria either), it doesn’t make the Spurs jibes any less sour. So it’s natural that any chance the club can get to leave a sour taste in Mourinho’s mouth in return would be very much appreciated by their fanbase.

The opportunity to get Szymański is one such chance. Mourinho is going into a club that in any other season would have run away with the league last time around. It will be hard to follow up a points tally of 99, especially if he doesn’t deliver a trophy soon, and Mourinho’s chances of doing so would be significantly affected if Szymański were to be taken off his hands.

It’s not just that; Szymański is also of a profile Ange Postecoglou would prefer working with. It’s a win-win scenario for Spurs.
