Tottenham exploring January swoop for Real Betis midfielder Johnny Cardoso

Tottenham are eyeing summer move for Real Betis star Johnny Cardoso as one of their targets to prepare for next season’s Champions League

Tottenham Hotspur exceeded all expectations and defeated Manchester United 1-0 in the UEFA Europa League final in Bilbao on Wednesday.

It ended the club’s 17-year long wait for silverware, and by clinching the Europa League trophy, the Lilywhites have also qualified for next season’s Champions League. With the club sitting just a spot above the relegation zone, a squad overhaul is the need of the hour and a £100m windfall from Champions League qualification will be of massive help.

The Europa League success might just paper over the cracks for some time and hide the gloomy Premier League campaign. But if Spurs are desperate to enjoy a far better domestic season in 2025/26, they have to bring in reinforcements in the upcoming transfer window. Several areas of the squad needs addressing to help the Tottenham gaffer juggle domestic competitions and the Champions League.

Real Betis midfielder Johnny Cardoso is earmarked as one of the summer targets to strengthen Tottenham squad ahead of their Champions League return

Now, according to a report from Spanish outlet Fichajes, Tottenham have added Real Betis midfielder Johnny Cardoso in their shortlist to compete in the Champions League next term. The other targets are RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko and playmaker Xavi Simons.

Johnny Cardoso has been one of the standout midfielders in La Liga this season, thanks to the consistency levels he has achieved especially since the turn of the year. After overcoming his fair share of injury issues, the USA international has managed to become one of the first names on Manuel Pellegrini’s teamsheet. The enforcer has played a pivotal role in helping Real Betis qualify for the UEFA Europa Conference League, where they will face Chelsea in Poland.

The aforementioned report adds Cardoso is also been the subject of interest from some European clubs, although Spurs hold a special clause that puts them in an advantageous position to bag his signature. But a potential deal is not expected to be straightforward and the North London club bosses will have to persuade the player to join their forces at N17.

Can Daniel Levy and his team persuade Johnny Cardoso to join Tottenham in the summer?

Tottenham’s entry back into the Champions League could help them to lure the 23-year-old away from Betis. Cardoso has expressed his wish to continue at the Benito Villamarin, thus, Daniel Levy and his team have some job to do if they feel the American midfielder would enhance the quality of the existing squad.

More Tottenham Hotspur News:

The Lilywhites are ready to cash in on Yves Bissouma as he enters the final year of his contract this summer. And a player of Cardoso’s technical quality and physicality would be a straight upgrade on the inconsistent Bissouma at White Hart Lane, whilst further trimming the overall age of the squad. He’d also be the cultured defensive midfielder to add balance to the Tottenham side.

All in all, the Betis star should be brought in by the Hotspur Way chiefs as he has the qualities to bolster the Spurs squad and make them competitive in the elite European competition.
