Tottenham Hotspur need to address the problems at the back in the upcoming summer transfer window.

The Lilywhites have conceded way too many goals for their liking in the Premier League, and the clean sheets have been a rarity. Six clean sheets in 37 Premier League games paints the concerns they’ve been enduring as a unit, costing the team consistently.

Spurs have been forced to deal with a glut of injuries to key defenders this season. That has hindered the performance levels and consistency on the pitch severely. First-choice centre-backs Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven have missed significant parts of the season as well due to long-term injuries.

Tottenham step up their interest in Genoa defender Koni De Winter

Kevin Danso was signed on loan from RC Lens during the January transfer window to fix their woes at the back. Although Danso is on course to become a permanent member of Spurs’ squad in the coming days, thanks to the club having an obligation to buy him from RC Lens at the end of his initial loan spell, Daniel in the market for another option in central defence.

Genoa’s Koni De Winter has been linked with a move to Tottenham in recent weeks and months. Spurs enquired about the 22-year-old earlier this month, and now it feels they’ve stepped up their pursuit of the player.

According to a report from Italian outlet La Repubblica, Tottenham have offered £20m to sign Koni De Winter from Genoa this summer. Juventus and Inter Milan have also shown an interest in the defender, but it is Spurs who have made the first move to bag his services.

De Winter has gone from strength to strength since moving to Genoa from Juventus in 2023, initially on loan before a buy obligation clause was triggered last year. The Belgian has played 56 times in all competitions for Rossoblu thus far, netting three goals and bagging an assist. He has endured a stop-start season, with a hamstring injury keeping him out of action for more than 70 days.

Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero wanted by Atletico Madrid

Since returning from injury in late December, the versatile defender been a rock-solid performer for Patrick Vieira’s side, who are currently 13th in Serie A. Despite having a contract at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium until 2028 (Transfermarkt), Genoa are willing to sell De Winter this summer for a fee between €25m and €30m.

Spurs have made a £20m proposal which comes closer to the Italian club’s valuation of the player. The Antwerp native, who can also operate at right-back and midfield, would be a good fit at White Hart Lane. He’d be a smart, long-term option to potentially replace Romero, who is wanted by Atletico Madrid.

Having made the first offer for De Winter, it clearly suggests the Tottenham bosses are concretely interested in him and want the defender to be a part of the squad next season.
