Tottenham among clubs keen on Lyon winger Malick Fofana

Tottenham are eyeing a summer swoop for highly-rated Lyon talent Malick Fofana

Tottenham Hotspur have been slow movers in the summer transfer window. They have only completed the signings of Kevin Danso and Mathys Tel.

Mathys Tel joined permanently following his loan spell from Bayern Munich. Kevin Danso signed from RC Lens for £21m, which isn’t bad business given Micky van de Ven’s injury record and uncertainty surrounding the future of Cristian Romero.

However, Spurs need to move quickly to their summer targets and back their new boss Thomas Frank to the hilt. The Danish tactician worked wonders with Brentford in a seven-year stay, turning them from a Championship club to a mid-table Premier League side. The 51-year-old needs fresh players to work with and implement his ideas, with the Lilywhites linked to a number of new talents across the continent.

It is no surprise that Tottenham are looking at wide players to potentially replace their ageing icon Son Heung-min. The South Korean international showed signs of decline this past season and there is a possibility of the club cashing in on him this summer. Therefore, Daniel Levy perhaps is aiming to bring in a potential replacement to fill the void left behind.

According to a report from ESPN, Tottenham are among several Premier League clubs keen on signing Lyon’s highly-rated winger Malick Fofana. Everton, Fulham, Newcastle United and Brighton are all interested in him, while Chelsea have held talks earlier this week with Lyon over a potential move. The Ligue 1 outfit value their rising talent at around £40m-£45m.

Malick Fofana has just enjoyed a breakthrough season at Lyon, contributing 11 goals and six assists despite not being a regular starter. He was fantastic in their Europa League campaign, making eight goal contributions in 10 games and most notably starring in the dramatic quarter-final second leg tie against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Daniel Levy must show ambition and back Thomas Frank in the transfer market

The aforementioned report adds the one-cap Belgium international wants to stay in Ligue 1 for another season, but Lyon’s crunch financial situation and desperate need to balance the books means they could sell him this summer.

Capable of operating on both flank, Fofana has predominantly played as a left-winger over the last season for the French club, often cutting in on his right foot. While the quoted valuation of £40m-£45m is steep for a young, unproven talent, the 20-year-old is a player with massive potential, which would appeal to a Tottenham side who have signed young, exciting talents with high ceiling in recent years.

Levy has not been afraid to splash the cash when it comes to signing youngsters like Lucas Bergvall, Archie Gray, Wilson Odobert, and very recently Tel. As far as Fofana is concerned, the Tottenham honcho must follow the same pattern and enhance the squad by going all out for his signature.
