“People don’t know”- Club icon bats for Tottenham honcho Daniel Levy in a bid to break fan ‘perception’

Tottenham fans have showcased time and again that they do not back Daniel Levy to succeed at N17
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is certainly not a popular figure at N17. The Lilywhites have managed to win only two major trophies in the last two decades during the Englishman’s tenure. That just shows in which direction the North London club is heading as their rivals seem to improve year-by-year.
The fans have also showcased their frustration towards Levy and they have held multiple protests before home games against the club’s hierarchy. From sacking Pochettino just six months after the Argentinian led Spurs to the Champions League final in 2019, to relieving Ange Postecoglou from his duties just two weeks after the ex-Celtic boss ended the club’s 17-year wait for a major trophy… Daniel Levy has done it all.

It is not a surprise that ex-Spurs manager Jose Mourinho took a slight dig on Levy after the North London club won the Europa League in May. The legendary manager subtly insisted that the Tottenham chairman was happy that the club won the Europa League as he would ‘earn profits’ after receiving a cash-prize and ensuring Champions League qualification.
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is a villain at N17
One cannot be blamed for being against Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy. The Englishman has made some questionable decisions in the past during his time at the club, and that has costed the Lilywhites in more ways than one. However, the 63-year-old has successfully turned Spurs into a commercial giant of the sporting world, and has invested heavily into the training ground, as well as, the new stadium.
Now, club icon Jermain Defoe has rallied in support of Levy as the Spurs chairman faces scrutiny from the fanbase. Speaking on Open Goal YouTube channel, Defoe said,
“Do you know what it is with Daniel. People don’t know Daniel. He has this sort of perception. Daniel is a proper businessman. I know people have opinions, but if you want to go into business and run a club, who would you look at? The best training ground, the best in class, the best coaches in the academy, the best stadium, he’s managed to do that.”
Jermain Defoe insists that Tottenham fans misunderstand Daniel Levy. The club icon adds that the Spurs chairman is a ‘solid’ businessman who has run the North London club brilliantly. Defoe points out that Spurs have the best training facilities, the best coaches, and the best stadium because of Levy’s hard-work and business acumen.
While the popular opinion amongst the Spurs fanbase would be to criticise Daniel Levy for the footballing decisions in recent years. But one can always acknowledge the way Levy has managed to turn the ‘Spurs’ brand around and made the Lilywhites a commercial giant. The fans will hope that the Europa League success will turn Levy’s head and the Englishman will focus on bringing in reinforcements for Thomas Frank in the summer.

The club chairman is keen to kickstart a new era at N17 and wants Spurs to compete hard in the Premier League and the Champions League next season. For that, Levy would first need to give Thomas Frank some time to adapt and back the Danish tactician in the transfer window in the coming weeks. The 63-year-old still has time to change the fans’ opinion on him, and prioritising footballing decisions would be a step in the right direction.
