Tottenham pull out of race to sign Juventus winger Timothy Weah

Tottenham have decided to abandon their pursuit of Juventus winger Timothy Weah

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a move for several attackers this summer as they look to improve their forward line in time for the new season.

Spurs’ interest in Antoine Semenyo suffered a big blow when he signed a new contract at Bournemouth last week, prompting them to now focus on West Ham United attacker Mohammed Kudus. So far, they have had two bids rejected for Kudus, with West Ham setting ‘Tottenham tax’ for their star as per reliable journalist Sami Mokbel.

It is yet to be known what system Thomas Frank will employ at Tottenham. He demonstrated tactical versatility at Brentford, using a 3-5-2 and 4-3-3, although the Danish tactician largely employed a 4-2-3-1 system last season. Keeping Frank’s tactical fluidity in mind, it would not be wrong to say that the club bosses must focus on signing versatile players more this summer.

The North Londoners’ interest in Juventus’ Timothy Weah makes sense due to the 51-year-old’s desire to adapt to the opposition and make changes mid-game, with the USA international capable of operating as a right-winger, right-sided midfielder and right-back. Spurs were handed a boost in their pursuit of Timothy Weah when his deal with Nottingham Forest collapsed last week.

The 25-year-old’s future in Turin remains uncertain after a substandard season. Yet, there are several clubs willing to sign him, and it looks like some of them have moved ahead of Spurs.

According to a report from French outlet Foot Mercato, Tottenham are no longer keen on signing Weah from Juventus. Everton and Leeds United are now battling it out for the USA international’s services. Despite still three years remaining in his contract, Juventus are willing to sell the right-winger for €15m this summer.

How much of Tottenham's transfer inactivity is due to financial constraints versus Thomas Frank's need to assess the squad he inherited from Ange Postecoglou?
Tottenham have decided not to pursue Timothy Weah

Spurs cooling their interest in Weah may not be that surprising. This is because the Hotspur Way chiefs look fixated on signing Kudus, a player who can operate in multiple positions across the front-line and also behind the striker. If they manage to wrap up a deal for the Ghanaian international, Brennan Johnson, who was the club’s top scorer with 18 goals last season, will have to fight for his place in the team.

More Tottenham Hotspur News:

Frank needs two players at least in each attacking position to cover all the competitions in the upcoming season, and signing Kudus would sort out the lack of depth at right-wing. Plus, Dejan Kulusevski could also become an option if the new boss decides to use him on the right rather as a attacking No.8.

When considered these factors, a picture of why Tottenham may have decided to abandon their pursuit of Weah becomes clear.
