James Maddison’s injury might open the door for Liverpool player to now secure Tottenham move

Date:

Tottenham Hotspur have a dilemma that they need to address in the coming days. James Maddison suffered a cruel injury in the pre-season friendly against Newcastle United after coming on as a late substitute.

The 28-year-old had to be stretchered off after the game and Thomas Frank did not offer much optimism based on his initial prognosis. Maddison’s absence leaves a hole in the #10 spot, with Dejan Kulusevski also ruled out with an injury.

Thomas Frank has options in the squad who can play there. Mohammed Kudus can definitely do a more than decent job in that position, but that would mean that Spurs would be sacrificing his ability on the wing.

There is Pape Matar Sarr who can also play in that position. However, with the summer transfer window still open, one very realistic possibility for Spurs would be to sign a new player for the #10 role.

Harvey Elliott could now move to Tottenham

Now, as per Liverpool Echo, Maddison’s injury could open the door for Reds youngster Harvey Elliott to leave the club and join Tottenham this summer. Spurs have been linked with a move for the Merseyside player in recent weeks.

Elliott has been at Liverpool for a few seasons now. He has had his moments but is not a regular starter for Arne Slot, finding it difficult to break into the first team. Thus, the player hinted that he might have to be selfish for his own career’s sake.

Spurs turned their attention to the 22-year-old after they missed out on Nottingham Forest star Morgan Gibbs-White and this might be a move that could actually gather a lot of pace in the coming days, based on Maddison’s prognosis.

A versatile addition to the squad

One advantage with signing someone like Elliott from Liverpool would be the fact that he has the quality to play in multiple positions. Thus, this versatility could come in handy once Maddison makes a recovery to reclaim the #10 position.

Liverpool has been an excellent development ground for the English youngster and a move to Tottenham and the chance to train under Thomas Frank might be the perfect next step in his evolution.

It could all come down to what Liverpool demands to part ways with Elliott. The club has spent a lot of money to sign Florian Wirtz this summer and might be open to the idea of letting the Englishman leave. Let’s wait and see how things play out.
