Revealed: Daniel Levy wants this £78.5m player to replace Son Heung-min at Tottenham Hotspur

Date:

Tottenham Hotspur legend and club captain Son Heung-min played his last game for the club against Newcastle United earlier today. It was an emotional moment for the South Korean superstar.

Sonny moved to North London from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015. 10 years later, it is safe to say that along with English superstar Harry Kane, the duo will go down as two of the greatest players to play for Spurs in the recent decade.

However, football waits for no one, and Spurs need to continue building the squad in the absence of their talisman. As per Spanish outlet Diario AS, club chairman Daniel Levy wants to sign Real Madrid superstar Rodrygo to replace the club captain.

Tottenham remain keen on signing Rodrygo

We covered a story yesterday revealing that Tottenham remained keen on signing the 24-year-old attacker even as Liverpool and Arsenal cooled their interest in him. Now, it looks like Levy wants to sign the South American superstar.

The AS report mentions that the exit of Son Heung-min could help Tottenham sign Rodrygo this summer. The South Korean was said to be earning around €11 million per season on his contract at the N17, which is understandable as he was the club captain.

Now, the salary space that this frees up could help Tottenham sign the £78.5m winger from Real Madrid. Rodrygo’s future at the Spanish club is far from certain due to a number of reasons.

The presence of superstars at the club like Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Jr. and Jude Bellingham has seen Rodrygo slip through the cracks. New manager Xabi Alonso used the Brazilian very sparingly during the Club World Cup campaign.

A versatile Son Heung-min replacement

Rodrygo is a very versatile attacker who can play in a number of positions. He can lead the line as the number nine should that be the need and he has played most of his football for Real Madrid on the right.

However, the Brazilian’s best position is the left wing, which is exactly where Tottenham currently have a Son Heung-min sized hole. Should they be able to pull this off this summer, it would be a major coup for the North London club.

It must be said Levy is interested but will not go over and beyond to sign Rodrygo this summer. The report also mentions that the player might still prefer a move to Liverpool. Thus, Spurs fans must not get excited but the next few weeks should provide further clarity on this situation.
