Tottenham Hotspur will have the #7 jersey vacant in the coming days once Son Heung-min finalises his exit agreement. The South Korean superstar played his last game in a Spurs jersey against Newcastle United earlier today.
Sonny has been at the North London club for the better part of 10 years now. He has been a part of all the ups and downs that the club has faced during this period and lifted the trophy in his final season at the club.
Once Harry Kane and Hugo Lloris left the club, the 33-year-old also wore the armband of the club. He would go down in history as the captain who broke the trophy curse and brought back silverware to the N17.
What would Spurs do with the #7 jersey?

Now, as per Dean Jones and Matt Smith on Give Me Sport, Tottenham Hotspur have the key decision to make regarding the successor to Son Heung-min for the number 7 jersey in the upcoming season.
The report mentions that there is a good chance Spurs could choose to leave the number vacant for the upcoming 2025/26 season until they find the perfect successor to carry forward the South Korean’s legacy.
The last time the club were faced with such a dilemma was when Harry Kane left Spurs to join Bayern Munich, leaving the #10 jersey vacant. Back then, the club did not wait and immediately offered it to James Maddison, who had just arrived.
A worthy successor is needed
Maddison was a worthy successor to Kane for that jersey. In his couple of seasons at the N16, he has had his moments and the only hope Tottenham would have is that they find a similar successor to Son Heung-min.
If Spurs did decide to look within the squad for the upcoming season, they could give the #7 to the likes of Mathys Tel or Brennan Johnson. The latter in particular has been at the club for a couple of seasons and could take forward the legacy.
It remains to be seen what Daniel Levy & co. decide. Leaving the #7 jersey vacant might affect the club financially in terms of jersey sales and let’s wait and see how things play out.
