Tottenham Hotspur had major doubts coming into the transfer window on their ability to retain some of their important assets. However, with the exception of Son Heung-min, they have managed to keep hold of everyone.
The South Korean superstar was anyway 33 and in his last legs at the N17. More importantly, it was important for Spurs to keep hold of the likes of Cristian Romero, who was a hot commodity in the transfer market.
Not only did Daniel Levy & co. manage to keep hold of Romero but he has also succeeded Son as Spurs’ new captain for the upcoming season. It is fair to say that the World Cup winner has started the new season well.
Tottenham convince Cristian Romero to sign a new contract
Now, as per Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, the Tottenham Hotspur superstar has agreed to sign a new contract at the North London club. This would come as a massive boost to Spurs fans.
Although the journalist has not mentioned the length of the new contract, it does seem that Romero made the decision as early as June to commit his future to Tottenham and not entertain offers.
Atletico Madrid were the club that were heavily linked with a potential move for Romero this summer. However, Romano has mentioned that it was merely conjecture and that there wasn’t much negotiations on the front.
Huge part of the new project

As per the journalist, Thomas Frank sees Romero as a huge part of his project and rightly so. When fit, there aren’t many central defenders in the world who are better at what they do than the ex-Atalanta man.
In recent years, Romero has also managed to reign in his recklessness and channelized his aggression in the right direction. Wearing the armband is likely to make him even more responsible.
Managing to convince Cristian Romero to sign a new deal would be as good as a new signing this summer for the N17 faithful. Let’s hope the Argentinian can continue to bring glory to Spurs in the coming season and beyond.
