Tottenham are looking to build on UEL success under Cristian Romero’s leadership this season
Tottenham star Cristian Romero has become a fan favourite at N17 for his consistent performances, week in, week out. The Argentina international has been a key figure in the dressing room under various managers, and that is not going to change any time soon. Fans are also glad to see the 27-year-old committing his long-term future to the Lilywhites.
It had become an open secret that Romero was linked with a move away from the north London club, with Atlético Madrid trying hard to land him. At one point, it was reported that Atletico manager Diego Simeone called the prolific centre-back every day to convince him to come to Spain in the summer and play for the La Liga giants.
However, the 27-year-old decided to snub the Spanish club and instead signed a long-term contract extension at N17 before the start of the new season. Not only that, Romero was also made club captain by Thomas Frank following Heung-min Son’s departure from the north London club after a ten-year stint.

The 27-year-old was the standout player on the pitch, and his stellar performance earned him the Man of the Match award in Bilbao. Now, Romero’s international teammate Papu Gomez has praised the defender’s determination and ability. Speaking exclusively to Julian Polo (via YouTube), Gomez said,
“I’ve never seen anything like Cristian Romero, he’s extraordinary. He has character, personality, and later he improved even more in many aspects. But the mentality, he already had it inside him. What came next was just polishing the technique, the details. He’s sharp, aggressive… impressive.”
Gómez believes Cristian Romero has immense character to be the best player on the pitch. He also points out that Romero has improved his game significantly while maintaining the right mentality to succeed. Gómez adds that the Spurs defender has polished his game by always being proactive and aggressive.
Not many Tottenham fans will disagree with Gómez’s assessment. Cristian Romero is already a Spurs legend for helping the north London club end its 17-year wait for a major trophy. His desire to build on last season’s Europa League success shows why he has the mentality to lead the Lilywhites this season.
