Tottenham handed transfer hope as Getafe star plots 2025 Premier League switch

Getafe defender Omar Alderete has been linked with a move to Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur’s poor season continued last weekend when they lost 2-1 at home to Newcastle United in the Premier League.

One cannot deny that injuries to several players have been one of the mitigating factors behind the North London outfit’s underwhelming displays. Ange Postecoglou has been dealing with an unprecedented injury crisis at White Hart Lane, with his defensive unit being hit the hardest.

Defenders Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Ben Davies have all been on the sidelines for some time now, while Destiny Udogie suffered a recent hamstring injury in the 2-2 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers. The persistent injuries has forced young midfielder Archie Gray to fill in as a centre-back alongside Radu Dragusin in recent weeks.

Spurs star Micky van de Ven has been sidelined for a long time.

Thus, it isn’t surprising that the Lilywhites have been linked with several central defenders in recent weeks, and one of those is Getafe’s Omar Alderete.

Omar Alderete has proven himself to be a reliable performer for Getafe ever since arriving at the club—initially on loan from German club Hertha BSC. He was a rock at the back last season, racking up 31 appearances in La Liga. The Paraguayan international has made 17 league starts this campaign thus far, catching the eye with his strength, decision-making, ball-playing ability and leadership skills.

Amidst speculation surrounding his future, Alderete’s agent, Renato Bittar, has now confirmed that four different Premier League clubs have expressed in signing the defender. When asked about the speculation over Alderete’s future, Bittar told Spanish outlet La Razon (h/t Sport Witness):

“There are four clubs in England that want him. It’s time to take the leap. If not now, he will leave Getafe in the summer.”

Daniel Levy has to back Big Ange with reinforcements

Bittar’s recent revelation about his client should give Spurs hope to launch an offensive this month. Alderete has a €16m release clause in his contract that runs until June 2028 (Transfermarkt), which is affordable for Tottenham.

Left-footed, the South American would enhance the North Londoners’ defensive unit whilst being a solid option to rest and rotate with the injury-prone Van de Ven. He can also operate at left-back when required, which adds more value to his name. At 28, Alderete is operating at the peak of his powers and could make an immediate impact at Tottenham.
