Lazio value Mario Gila at around €50m amid Spurs interest

Tottenham are among several clubs keen on signing Lazio defender Mario Gila this summer

No one knows what the future holds for Cristian Romero. But he has made it clear already that he wishes to play in La Liga.

Having arrived from Atalanta in 2021 with high promise, it is fair to say that the Argentinean defender has performed consistently throughout his time at Spurs until this past season, which was hampered majorly by injury problems.

The 27-year-old spent over three months on the sidelines, and his absence directly impacted the team’s defensive organisation and stability under former boss Ange Postecoglou. Yet, Cristian Romero’s stock remains high. He delivered a Man of the Match display during the Europa League final win over Manchester United in Bilbao in May.

Atletico Madrid have been keen on signing Tottenham’s defensive lynchpin, and TBR Football senior correspondent Graeme Bailey expects Romero to clinch a move to the La Liga side this summer.

In terms of replacements, Lazio defender Mario Gila has emerged as an option for the North Londoners. They aren’t the only club interested in him; Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid, Bournemouth and Chelsea are all keeping tabs.

Bournemouth and Chelsea have made advances to sign the Spaniard. Lazio have reportedly rejected a €40m offer from Bournemouth, deeming Mario Gila ‘non-transferrable’. Chelsea also made a €35m bid, which was also turned down. This is after Maurizio Sarri returned to Lazio earlier this month and asked the club officials to not sell Mario Gila, who has been a rock at the back in the last two campaigns in Serie A.

However, according to a report from Il Messaggero, the Biancocelesti could consider offers for the Tottenham-linked Gila in the region of €50m.

Spurs have had problems at the back this past season, something new boss Thomas Frank along with club bosses must resolve over the summer transfer window. With Romero’s future up in the air, there is no way the Lilywhites enter the 2025/26 season without reinforcements in central defence.

Gila, in that regard, would be a fantastic option. The Spaniard has impressed with his leadership skills, physicality and ball-playing ability, which makes him a total package and a good choice to potentially replace Romero at N17. He is only 24 and would get better with time, experience and maturity.

Now that Lazio have apparently revealed their valuation of their defensive colossus, Tottenham must not hesitate to pay €50m and get his signature.
