Tottenham star Cristian Romero has proven his commitment to the club by extending his contract until 2029

It is fair to say that the last week has been a whirlwind for Tottenham star Cristian Romero. The Argentina international was recently made club captain for the new season before the Lilywhites took on PSG in the UEFA Super Cup final. And that decision was not an easy one to take as he had to fill in the boots of legendary winger Heung-Min Son.

Not only that, but the North London club came within touching distance of winning a major trophy in Romero’s first game in charge as club captain. Winning against PSG would have been a dream start for the 27-year-old’s tenure as the new club captain. The prolific defender also got on the scoresheet in his first game leading the team out. But winning a major trophy was not meant to be as Spurs got beaten on penalties.

Tottenham star Cristian Romero shares his thoughts after signing a contract extension

Cristian Romero’s future at Tottenham was the headline of the summer after it was made clear that the defender wanted to move to pastures new. The Argentina international was linked with a move to Atletico Madrid, and it was reported that Diego Simeone called the player ‘every day’ to lure him to Spain. But the deal fell off after the Spanish giants failed to match the asking price Spurs had set for the player.

Now, Romero has signed a contract extension at N17 instead, keeping him at the club until 2029. And the Argentina defender cannot be more excited for the future as he looks to etch his name in the club’s history books. Speaking to the Tottenham media team, Romero said,

“Honestly, the last two weeks, first captain, now a new contract with the Club, I’m very, very happy. For me, it’s a fantastic decision. Now we start together again. I’m very happy at the club. For me, this club is the best in the world. For this, I extend my contract.”

Cristian Romero has indicated that he is ‘very happy’ after being elected as the new captain, as well as, signing a contract extension at N17. The Argentina international has reiterated that it is a fantastic decision as he looks to win more trophies with the Lilywhites. Romero also suggests that Tottenham is the ‘best club in the world’ and that is the reason why he extended his contract.

Thomas Frank is ‘extremely happy’ with Cristian Romero staying put

One of the first things that Thomas Frank did after becoming the new Tottenham manager was to notify the club’s hierarchy that Cristian Romero was an important part of his setup. The Danish tactician had no intentions of losing his best defender, and made sure that Romero felt valued at N17 during the summer. Therefore, the ex-Brentford boss decided to make him the club captain for the new season.

Now, Thomas Frank has shared his thoughts about Romero signing a contract extension. Speaking to Tottenham’s media team, Frank said,

“Of course, extremely happy. He’s a very important player for us, just been named captain so that speaks for itself. For me, he’s one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League.”

The Spurs manager added,

“To have him locked down long-term, every fan, me, staff, should be extremely happy. It also shows he’s committed to the journey we’re on and the future and the bits we’re building together. Very happy.”

Thomas Frank has reiterated that Cristian Romero is an important player for the team and he is also one of the best defenders in the Premier League right now. The Danish tactician then suggested that everyone associated with the club in any way should be happy that the Argentine signed a contract extension. The Spurs manager indicated that Romero is committed to the club and wants to build on the Europa League success.
