Tottenham handed a boost in their pursuit of Liam Delap.

Tottenham have been interested in signing Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap

Tottenham Hotspur have been vying for the signing of a new forward since the start of the January transfer window.

The knee injury to Dominic Solanke has further pressed the club’s need to bring in a new forward. In the last couple of days, Spurs have been subject to aggressive links with Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel. In fact, the North Londoners are the only club to have reached a verbal agreement with Bayern Munich over a £50 million transfer for the Frenchman. However, Tel is yet to make a decision on his future as he contemplates his options.

Simultaneously, the Lilywhites have also held an interest in Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap. The England youth international has caught the eye with eight goals in 22 Premier League matches for Ipswich Town after his summer move from Manchester City to Portman Road. The 21-year-old centre-forward has also been linked with a move to Chelsea.

Thus, it is not hard to see why he is sought-after across the Premier League. GIVEMESPORT correspondent Ben Jacobs has dropped an update on the situation of Liam Delap ahead of next week’s transfer deadline, claiming that the player is quite keen on a move to a London club amid interest from both Tottenham and Chelsea.

“And then obviously the knock on effect would be that Chelsea may be more inclined to go for Delap. Chelsea might even say right now, and it’s very early I know, they ranked Delap above Sesko in their list of possibilities. But I think Tottenham will be in that conversation for Liam Delap as well,” Ben Jacobs said on Last Word On Spurs podcast.

“I think the player is quite keen on moving to a London club. I don’t think, because he’s playing at Ipswich at the moment, he minds about the now. So again, it’s about where’s the best development, where’s the best package, where’s the best training facilities, where’s the best manager.

“It’s not about who’s got Champions League football right now. So, if Spurs didn’t get Europe, I don’t think it would put them at a significant disadvantage compared to, say, Chelsea. It would be more about who can convince the player he’s going to play regularly and thrive under a manager and in that system.”

Liam Delap has been impressive in his breakout Premier League campaign. He is not only proving his potential at Ipswich Town but has also shown that he can carry a team through difficult waters. And his age, complemented by his high potential, attributes and homegrown quota, is ideal for Daniel Levy’s recent transfer policy at Tottenham, where he looks to nurture a young player’s potential within the corridors of Hotspur Way.

As stated by Jacobs, Spurs are facing competition from London rivals Chelsea for the Englishman’s signature. Daniel Levy has been considering a potential “blockbuster” move to bring Delap to White Hart Lane this winter transfer window. However, Manchester City do retain control over the striker’s future having inserted a buy-back clause.

Needless to say, Ipswich have no interest in selling their star striker midway through their battle against relegation, but Spurs can tempt Delap by providing him with a good package, great training facilities, regular game time and the opportunity to unlock his vast potential under Postecoglou. If he agrees to join now, they can give him the platform to perform in Europe as well.

While the Tractor Boys are unlikely to entertain any offers for Delap just a couple of days before the transfer deadline, Spurs must still test their resolve with a tempting bid.
